Terrorist & Rebel Audio/Video Releases: Primary Location Focus Animated Heatmap

The animated heatmap shows terrorist and rebel produced audio/video releases by their primary location focus when dating and geocoding data is available. It is regularly updated as both new and archive releases are added to the IntelCenter Database (ICD) or improved dating and/or geocoding data becomes available.

You can zoom in to view specific regions/countries as well as change the time period by using the period selection bar at the bottom.

Methodology Note:

All of the audio/video releases shown were manually collected and processed. In insurgent theaters, it is likely the case that there are more releases than shown on the map. The primary location focus for each release is determined by looking at a combination of factors to include where footage was filmed, who the video is directed at and where the video was likely produced from. In cases where multiple locations are given, analysts select the most significant of the locations. Only one location per audio/video release is shown. Country, province and other center points are used when a more specific location for the video cannot be established. The geocoding is done using a variety of methods to determine the most likely location, however, as it goes with geocoding it is most definitely not the final say. IntelCenter is always working to improve the accuracy of the geocoding and its level of detail. All of the audio/video releases shown on the map are available in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Video Component.
