Islamic State's (IS) Amaq News Audio/Video Releases Down 6% in 2022, On Track for 80% Drop in 2023

Islamic State's (IS) Amaq News audio/video annual release rate was down 6% in 2022 from 2021. It has held relatively stable for the four-year period from 2019 to 2022. However, its rate of releases plummeted in the first five months of 2023. Its current rate is on track for an 80% drop in 2023 from 2022.

In 2022, it had 61 releases at a release rate of one every 5.98 days compared to 2021 when it had 80 releases at a rate of one every 5.62 days. In 2023, it had five releases as of 29 May at a release rate of one every 29.8 days. The 2022 decrease put it 3% below its average annual release rate of 63 per year for 2020 to 2022. It is 73% below its average annual release rate of 227 per year for 2014 to 2022.

Amaq News had 2,048 audio/video releases from 2014 to 2022. It favors video releases with all 2,048 releases being videos and no audio only. Total releases amount to more than 34 hours of material with an average runtime of 0:01:01. The shortest release was 0:00:05 and the longest was 0:11:44.

Methodology Note:
The analysis includes all audio/video releases by the group’s specific media arm. Releases done in multiple parts were counted as one release per part even if two parts came out on the same day. Alternate language versions by the group were counted but alternate language versions by supporters were not.
