5 Key al-Qaeda Affiliates Already or About to Surpass 2022 Audio/Video Release Levels or Maintain Record Highs, al-Qaeda’s as-Sahab Only One Showing Drop in 2023 as of 6 June

Five key al-Qaeda affiliates have already or are about to surpass 2022 audio/video release levels for their primary media arms or are maintaining record highs. Al-Qaeda’s as-Sahab is the only one showing a drop in 2023 releases as of 6 June.

Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent’s (AQIS) as-Sahab (Subcontinent) has already surpassed 2022 levels. Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam was Muslimeen’s (JNIM) az-Zallaqa and al-Ezza have already tied the 2022 level which was the group’s highest year since 2018. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s (AQAP) al-Malahim and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb’s (AQIM) al-Andalus are both on track to surpass 2022 levels at their current rates. Al-Shabaab’s al-Kataib is not on track to surpass it’s 2022 level, however, it is on track to maintain record high levels set in 2021 and 2022.

Methodology Note:
The analysis includes all audio/video releases by each group’s specific media arms. Releases done in multiple parts were counted as one release per part even if two parts came out on the same day. Alternate language versions by the group were counted but alternate language versions by supporters were not.
