Global VBIED Daily Attack Rate Down 41% from 2019, Down 74% from 2015

The daily rate of global Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attacks is down 41% in 2020 compared to 2019, as of 27 Apr.. It is 74% down from a peak in 2015. VBIED attacks are currently occurring at a rate of one every 3.03 days. In 2019, the rate was one every 1.78 days.

IntelCenter tracked 1,998 VBIED attacks from 2014 to 27 Apr. 2020. A total of 11,845 people were killed and 20,809 injured. The average killed per attack was 5.93 and average injured 10.41. The highest number killed in one attack was 587 and the highest number injured in one attack was 600.

METHODOLOGY NOTE: This analysis included car and truck VBIEDs as well as armored and remote-controlled variants. Parked and moving VBIEDs were counted. It did not include motorcycle VBIEDs or those delivered by boat or animal. It also did not include VBIEDs used in coordinated assaults where it was only one element of the attack and not the primary method. It does include accidental detonations of VBIEDs and those that were intercepted or failed to detonate at or on en route to an attack.
