Islamic State (IS) Attacks in West: 29 Jun 2014 - 25 Jun 2017

A total of 56 attacks inspired, supported or directed by the Islamic State (IS) have occurred in the West since its announcement of a Caliphate on 29 Jun. 2014 to 25 Jun. 2017. The attacks resulted in a total of 1,676 casualties. In 2017, attacks are occurring at a rate of one every 15 days and are on average resulting in 23 casualties per attack.

A total of 10 Western countries have been hit by attacks over the period. They include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, UK and US.

France, Belgium, the UK and US bore the heaviest casualties with 92% of casualties occurring over the period happening in those four countries. France on its own accounts for 49% of casualties and 33% of all attacks. The top four countries and Germany are expected to continue to face the greatest threat going forward for inspired, supported and directed IS attacks.

Methodology Note:
All attacks associated with IS were counted, including both directed, supported and inspired attacks. Inspired, supported and directed attacks tied to al-Qaeda or other jihadi groups were not counted. The original source data for all incidents shown here is located in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) Incident Component.
