al-Qaeda Affiliates & Jihadi Groups in its Greater Orbit
Interactive Map

This map shows al-Qaeda affiliates and those jihadi groups in its greater orbit by their base countries. The map reflects the increasing diversity and complexity of threats that exist today. Of the 40 groups currently shown on the map, 27 did not exist in any shape or form before 9-11 and most of the 13 that did have morphed into more sophisticated and operationally active groups. While being linked by similar ideologies and varying operational ties, each group operates with its own tactical and targeting preferences. Attempts to label all of these groups as "al-Qaeda" is as grossly inaccurate as calling French or British forces American simply because they are jointly participating in a Coalition force with the US. Each country brings to the table different skill sets and capabilities just as do the groups shown on this map, however, for many the word coalition could only be applied in its loosest form or not at all. The greatest growth areas in terms of the number of groups is Syria and Mali. There has not been such an explosion of new groups in any one country as is happening in Syria now since Iraq. NEW BOOK

al-Qaeda Maghreb Audio/Video Reference
1st Edition

Order | Additional Details

This 34-page full-color book serves as a chronological reference to al-Qaeda Organization in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQLIM) audio/video releases from 2007 to 3 Nov. 2012. The official video production group of AQLIM is al-Andalus. Releases from al-Andalus will have the al-Andalus logo displayed next to the AQLIM logo. This book includes releases before the appearance of al-Andalus in 2009. The book is designed to allow you to rapidly scan and identify releases of interest. It contains listings for 78 releases covering 30 hours, 29 minutes and 27 seconds of material. Each listing contains the date of release, group name and logo, associated country and flag, release title, video type, primary spoken and subtitle languages, runtime, top two identified new appearances, whether it is from a supporter group, the logos of the video production arm and supporter group and up to six representative stills from the video. Every listing also contains a unique Video ID# that can be used to reference the release and pull up the release’s full entry in the IntelCenter Database (ICD) where a complete, high-quality streaming version can be watched if you have an ICD account. The representative stills are taken by an analyst and selected to give you the best idea of what the video contains within six stills. If fewer than six stills are shown it is because the video did not contain any significantly different scenes then what is displayed. For example, if a video statement from Ayman al-Zawahiri shows a still photograph of him for the entire length of the video, then only one still would be shown. If the video showed al-Zawahiri moving, then multiple stills would be shown. If all six slots are used, then the video will often contain more types of scenes then can be represented and it is best to watch the full video to get a complete understanding of what it contains. Due to the fluid nature of terrorist and rebel audio/video collection, release listings are always increasing even long after their release period and details are constantly being added as additional clarity is reached. As additional listings for the year are discovered, new editions to this title will be released. Always refer to the IntelCenter Database (ICD) for the latest and most comprehensive listings. This book only represents a snapshot from the time of its release.

Terrorist/Rebel Video Country Focal Points
Jun-Sep 2012

IntelCenter Database (ICD)

View Map

This new interactive map shows the volume of terrorist/rebel audio/video releases per country from Jun. - Sep. 2012. By tracking the increases and decreases in the volume of releases we are able to gain better insight into what is coming. An increase in terrorist or rebel releases often precede increases in attacks and operational tempo in that country. Not surpisingly there has been an increase of material originating from Syria and Libya, however, the most significant new addition is Myanmar. While the map only reflects one release for the period, an increase in Burmese language jihadi material reflects a significant growth in focus on Myanmar. The spread of material throughout Africa reflects a growing and coninued threat in that region. Levels throughout Africa are expected to continue to rise. For more details click here.
